Tapisserie des Gobelins, Tenture de L'Histoire d'Alexandre

Glorious Fabrics, from Alexander the Great to Louis XIV

This event is over. To find another one in Paris Île-de-France, see the datebook.

From 01 November 2008 To 28 February 2009
Galerie des Gobelins

The Manufacture des Gobelins (Gobelins’ factory) was created at the beginning of the Sun King Reign. This exhibition gathers historic furniture and antique tapestries dedicated to the celebration of Louis XIV – who had a taste for fine arts.

You’ll be able to admire the thirteen magnificent tapestries of L’Histoire d’Alexandre (Alexander the Great story), weaved after Charles Le Brun paintings and three rare silk hangings including the famous Passage du Rhin inspired from a work of Van der Meulen– a miracle, as silk is very fragile, and rarely survive a century. The tapestries were weaved to comfort the King in his power by comparing him to the mythical Emperor, and the silks celebrate his army.

They are enhanced by the delicate works chosen by Jacques Garcia, who designed the scenography and selected beautiful furniture in the reserve collection.
