Château de Versailles
This is the first time that the Château de Versailles has devoted an exclusive exhibition to its great builder, Louis XIV. Paintings, sculptures, objets d’art, furniture – visitors will be able to view more than 300 exceptional works from collections all around the world never previously seen together.
These masterpieces, some of which are going on show for the first time in France since before the Revolution, will allow the public to get to become more familiar with the famous monarch, a sun god evoking the ascendance of Apollo before his dazzled subjects, but also a man of genuine taste and a passionate art lover in private. A visit to the château and gardens of Versailles is highly recommended to fully appreciate the great work of Louis XIV, as is the retrospective "Fastes Royaux. La collection des tapisseries de Louis XIV ", on show from 20th September to 15th November, 2009, at the Galerie des Gobelins. This reveals the king’s passion for tapestries and complements this exhibition perfectly.
