José Berardo was born in Madeira, and made his fortune as an entrepreneur in South Africa. He used it to collect hundreds of Modern Art masterpieces in less than twenty years, dating back from 1900. He wanted to gather an “experiment of the Twentieth century”. Most of the artworks are displayed in his State foundation in Portugal, but for a change, 70 of them are welcomed by the Musée du Luxembourg.
The exhibition is organized through four themes: surrealism (with Miro, Dali and Breton), abstract art of the interwar period (Mondrian, Arp, Tanguy), Europe/USA in the Sixties (Pop Art and French Nouveau Réalisme: Warhol, Klein, Soulages), and post-Seventies visual arts (Riopelle, Schnabel, Stella).
The lobby room gathers some of his favourite works, by Picasso, Pollock, Gruber, de Staël and Balthus.
