Cinémathèque française
The Cinémathèque (the French Film Institute) welcomes a wonderful exhibition dedicated to Dennis Hopper. This major figure of counter-culture and West Coast Radicalism started his career in 1969 with the cult movie Easy Rider, which he directed as well as being the leading man. This film was considered as the emergence of a Hippie New Wave at a time when the Hollywood industry was in a crisis. In the same time, Dennis Hopper supported and filmed the heroes of the Californian underground culture.
This show displays videos and pictures he realized, but also a part of his personal art collection (which includes artworks from Warhol, Basquiat or Lichtenstein...). It tells the story of a changing country, from pop culture to suburbs’ subcultures, from the influence of psychedelics to action painting, from rebellion to disillusionment.
