La Villette adopts a Creole theme!
This event is over. To find another one in Paris Île-de-France, see the datebook. From 07 April To 05 Juily 2009
Grande halle de la Villette
As part of the "Creole season" devoted to the Caribbean islands and everything related to them, La Villette invites you to visit the "Kréyol Factory" contemporary art exhibition. Dedicated to the memory of Aimé Césaire, this event questions Creole identities, beyond their shared history marked by trade, slavery and colonization.
For the occasion, 60 Caribbean artists, from the Indian Ocean to the European and American outposts, present their vision of this multiple identity, through installations, pictorial and literary works, collections of photographs and documentaries.
The arrangement of this exhibition was organized to encourage visitors to see and feel the complexities of a questioning of identity resulting from history, the processes of Creolization and the effects of globalization. It is organized into seven thematic spaces: "Traversées" explores the theme of memory; "Le trouble des genres" examines the violence of slavery; "L’Afrique, communauté imaginée" questions links with Africa, the home country; "Noir comment?" tackles the system of colonial domination; "Des îles sous influences" evokes relations with the metropolis; "Les Nouveaux Mondes" examines cultural hybridization and "Chez soi - De loin" addresses assimilation.
For younger visitors, narrated visits and workshops for children aged from three to 10 are also available.
