From 30 June To 27 September 2009
Jeu de Paume

For more than 30 years, Martin Parr’s lens has been capturing every last detail of Western society: mass tourism, consumerist behaviour, middle-class culture… Nothing escapes the British photographer fascinated by the marvellous and grotesque aspects of daily life.

Parr, a member of the Magnum agency, has acquired an international reputation for the innovative quality of his images and his original social-documentary approach. He has now become one of the major figures in contemporary photography and his images are characterized by their saturated colours and biting humour.

This exhibition explores the amusing and satirical world of Martin Parr and reveals the hidden side of the photographer, who is also an enthusiastic collector of all kinds of objects, combining the intimate and collective, works by recognized artists as well as popular art.

In this contemporary box of curiosities, a series of kitsch postcards sits alongside "Obama" flip-flops, watches bearing the image of Saddam Hussein, Margaret Thatcher teapots and the biggest packet of crisps in the world! The exhibition will also display his latest series, "Luxury", for which he photographed fashion shows, art fairs and markets for luxury products all around the world.
