Centre Pompidou
A painter of black and of light, constantly searching for the light paradoxically revealed by this "non-colour", Pierre Soulages’s conceptual work has shown him to be one of the most important exponents of abstraction since the Second World War and established him as the greatest painter on the current French scene. To celebrate the artist’s 90th birthday, the Pompidou Centre is hosting the biggest retrospective ever organized by the museum for a living artist.
It will provide a new reading of Soulages’s work, focussing on recent developments in his painting based on around 100 major works from 1946 to the present day, and brought together exceptionally, with the majority never having been seen before by the public.
