This major exhibition explores the phenomenon of exotic shows, which swept over a part of the world for more than a century.
From 29 November 2011 To 03 June 2012
Musée du quai Branly
The purpose of this highly anticipated exhibition is to trace back the history of women and men brought back from Africa, America, Asia or Oceania to be shown to the public for entertainment, ethnographic or scientific purposes.
To address this sensitive issue, closely related to prejudices, the Museum of Quai Branly showcases nearly six hundred works, along with many projections of archive films.
Browse the mechanisms that created the wave of fairs phenomena, of the "shows of the difference" and other exotic reconstructions, born in the royal courts of the 16th century and continued in Europe, the United States and in Japan until the mid-twentieth century.
An exciting journey, sometimes unsettling, that questions the boundaries between exotic and monstrous, science and voyeurism, and invites everyone to question their own relationship with the others.
