Jews in Orientalism

The Museum of Art and History of Judaism has decided to focus on the perception of the Jew as an ‘Oriental figure’ through the art of the 19th century.

From 07 March To 08 July 2012
Musée d'art et d'histoire du judaïsme

From March 7th to July 8th, this exhibition will be devoted to the imaginary representation of the ‘Oriental’ Jew in works created between 1832 and 1929. In the early 19th century, encounters with the Middle Eastern Jewish community offered painters such as Eugène Delacroix and Théodore Chassériau a picturesque view of this region. La Noce juive is directly inspired by this travel to the Orient.

There are also paintings by David Roberts and Thomas Seddon, which reflect the search for the origins of humanity as far as Jerusalem. Other works also illustrate the approach of Jewish Orientalism in the Bible and Jewish history through its literary representations.

Conferences, symposia, concerts and reading sessions will be organized around the exhibition with experts regarding subjects relating to the role of Judaism in art.
