Masquerades and Carnivals

The Musée Dapper presents an original exhibition bringing together African masks and Caribbean figures. Fascinating!

From 05 October 2011 To 15 July 2012
Musée Dapper

In Africa, the celebration of the harvest, the enthronement of a chief and many other festivities are accompanied by the display of appropriate masks for the event. In the Caribbean, they are also showcased during the carnivals that punctuate life in the community.

The Musée Dapper gives you the opportunity to discover African art and creations from the Caribbean. Why are they so fascinating? What are their roles? Some of these questions are answered in the exhibition Masquerades and Carnivals which showcases astonishing masks and costumes.

You will discover them in their diverse forms: adorned with feathers, made with fibres or banana leaves, decorated with horns, bull’s teeth or fishing bells, using a motorcycle helmet, etc. Traditional and original works corresponding to a social, religious, political or identity related role.

Vaval, a Carnival figure from the West Indies and Guyana, is also shown as part of a beautiful installation specially designed by artist Hervé Beuze.
