Louis-François Lejeune is an unknown yet emblematic XIXth century figure. This exhibition celebrates his military and artistic work with a display of over 120 works of art, including thirteen paintings of battle scenes showing his commitment to the Napoleonic wars.
Several previously unseen works have been borrowed from his descendants for this unprecedented exhibition. These frames were used in military training at the time because of the accuracy of the scenes depicted. He portrays himself as military officer, then general, in his artwork. In Le Combat de Guisando (The Battle of Guisando) and L’Arrivée aux cantonnements à Mérida (Arrival at the military base in Mérida), he portrays himself naked.
As well as landscapes and portraits, several paintings and drawings display scientific instruments and maps exposing the artist’s analytical work.
