Fondation Henri-Cartier-Bresson
As luck would have it, the French photographer, founder of the Magnum agency, Henri Cartier-Bresson (also known as HCB), was travelling in Mexico at the same time as his American colleague, Paul Strand, who was also a painter.
The exhibition focuses on these two years of work carried out separately, as the two artists only crossed paths in 1935 in New York when they joined the politically committed Nykino group of filmmakers dedicated to a new visual and political experimentation.
Through this retrospective, the visitor will discover the very distinct worlds ofthe two photographers. The style of HCB appears fluid, in constant motion, while Strand’s images seem frozen in time. 90 works are presented here, from American, Mexican and Spanish collections for Strand’s work; and from his foundation for Cartier-Bresson’s work, with an added bonus of some unpublished work.
