Simpler, more didactic, better organised… The Pompidou Centre has decided to reorganise in depth the presentation of its modern art collections, on the 5th floor.

From 7th April, you can view this new layout, imagined by architect Gae Aulenti as a main road running down the middle of 42 halls retracing the history of 20th century art. Proceeding chronologically, starting at the so-called “historical” period (1905-1945), passing through the post-war period up until the '60s, take a trip through both time and the various artistic movements – cubism, the birth of abstraction, Dada, first and “second” surrealism, New French realists and American Neo-Dadas and kinetic art.

“Recesses” provide for other important movements to be presented such as Bauhaus, the Russian ballets and informal art. These spaces can also be used to show certain artists sharing a common vision or to highlight a particular year such as 1923.

At the same time, the museum also wanted to shine a spotlight on its exceptional monographic collections of the “masters” (Picasso, Matisse, Léger, Delaunay, Le Corbusier...). Another way to look at a century of creative excitement and aesthetic revolutions.

With its changed layout, illustrating the great diversity of disciplines (painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, cinema, design, architecture), the Pompidou Centre has made the most of the wealth of its collections – the most important collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe – and also revealed to us its latest acquisitions and donations.
