Puces de Saint-Ouen

Antiques

A tea set dating back 1852, a pair of Art Deco earrings, a choice of comic books or even a painting : if you like to hunt for antiques, Paris and its area are wonderful playgrounds.
Gilda's bookshop

hould you want to find a modest gift, or invest in some historical artwork, the Parisian area offers strong opportunities. For a huge choice, and an unmissable atmosphere, the best bets are at the gates of the city. The biggest flea-Market, known as « Puces de Saint-Ouen », offers fine vintage clothing (first floor, Dauphine market, look for Falbalas), but also a true atmosphere of a secondhand market (Vernaison) and of course luxury antiquarians (Paul Bert and Biron Markets). It's opened from Saturday to Monday - weekends are better. Cheaper, but also really hectic is the Vanves Flea-Market (Saturdays and Sundays from 7 AM). Come very early for the best gems, or enjoy the bric-a-brac.

Puces de Saint-Ouen

Should you be short on time, a visit to the 150 sellers of the Village Suisse (Swiss Village) is very easy : it's very close to the Eiffel Tower. Expect quality, but prices are as high as the monument. Even more expensive, the museum-like Louvre des Antiquaires, well named after the monument (at the other side of the street), is good for experts and bystanders. All these addresses are dedicated to top-notch arts and craft  and furniture. It's the same for the very beautiful galleries you'll find on Rue de Seine and Rue Bonaparte, close to the very posh district of Saint-Germain des Prés, but the window displays are already well worth a look. The so-called Village Saint-Paul is a mix between XXth Century design and very old lace. It's also one of the oldest areas of Paris, which has kept its Middle Age architecture.

If you love old books, don't miss the secondhand booksellers by the Pont-Neuf. The « bouquinistes » as we call them, are a true Parisian heritage. Some bookshops are also specialized in used books : Gilda (a short selection in English may be available) or Parallèles (a few English titles too).

Last but not least, for art lovers there is a market on boulevard Edgar-Quinet each Sunday morning : selected painters sell their work to the public.
