Paris is one of the leading capitals of culture and trends ! Litterary and arty shopping has never been so easy in our city. For English secondhand books, check Gibert Jeune, in the heart of the Latin Quarter. For rare publishers and a taste of sharp art, you should try Bookstorming-Maison Rouge : even the surrondings are worth the visit, they have been designed by the French visual artist Jean-Michel Alberola. Not very far away, Artazart offers design and illustrated books. Again, some are in English (and others in rarer languages). You may have heard of Taschen before : the award-winning German publisher has opened a bookshop near Saint-Germain-des-Prés, designed by Starck. But if you fancy a glimpse at an historical Saint-Germain spot, don't miss La Hune : it opened in front of the famous Café de Flore in 1949 and is still well ruling the market. It has another advantage : it's opened until 11.45 PM. And yes, they speak English. The best English bookshop are Brentano's (for an American-orientated selection, on 37 avenue de l'Opéra) or WH Smith (more British, of course, on 248 rue de Rivoli).
If you're into music, Paris offers some interesting alternative record dealers. Near Bastille, the Silence de la Rue is strong on the likes of Trojan and also good contemporary pop, like Mercury Rev. Ground Zero, set in the upcoming area of Saint-Marthe (10th district) is lead by the drummer of the Hush Puppies, an indie group which currently encounters some success. For a more electro selection, visit My Electro Kitchen : its very cheerful atmosphere is combined with a sharp eye for trends (Kitsuné, Ed Banger, Tigersushi...). It was recently opened by three highly-considered guardian angels : The Driver aka Manu le Malin, an hardrave hero, Patrick Vidal, a clubbing celebrity, and Howie B. from Glasgow. It often organizes showcases, a nice idea, too. (See the website for more info).
For DVD and blu-rays, go to MK2 Bibliothèque, but if you're a rarity maniac you may prefer Hors-Circuits.
Design is on offer at Centre Pompidou (Printemps du Design), at 107 (Arts Décoratifs), and at the inevitable Colette.
