In the Marais
The Marais is well-known for its historical buildings, its Gay bars, and the Jewish Pletzel... But it has recently changed a lot : its epicentre has moved up to the North-East : in the now called Upper Marais, fashion boutiques fight hard to seduce you.
Nothing like a stroll in the Marais is better to discover the latest trends. The neighbourhood of Hôtel-de-Ville is well-known for menswear (BHV Hommes), and is also home of the infamous Noir Kennedy (cult with kids). On Jewish rue des Rosiers, casher groceries are challenged by small boutiques and the Eclaireur emporium. But the true phenomenon is happening in the Upper Marais (Haut-Marais in French) : the last three years have seen dozens of concept-stores and designers opening in this area delimitated by a couple of streets, mainly rue Charlot and rue de Poitou. The visit can take as little as 20 minutes, but if you're into a shopping spree, it will take hours! On rue Charlot, check Samy Chalon and his inventive knitwear (at n°24), Gaspard Yurkievitch and his sexy stilettos (N°43), but also Emilie Casiez (at 57). Numéro 60, a rock n'roll fashion boutique founded by Agathe Buchotte is at... Number 60.
Don't miss rue de Poitou : at n°19, you'll find beautiful bags made from recycled leather jackets (Matières à réflexion), at n°15 the beautiful Shine (womenswear with a focus on designers like Preen). For a true vintage touch, try La Belle Epoque (n°10), but if you'd rather stick to French contemporary fashion and the likes of Vanessa Bruno , try Abou d'Abi Bazar (rue Vieille-du-Temple).
