China and South-East Asia

Paris offers three different Chinatowns: one is the well-known XIIIth district, another is a more recent settlement in Belleville, and the last is a very discreet area near Rue au Maire. Each of them relates to different nationalities, from Cambodia to North-East China. At the outskirts of the city, Ivry and Alfortville also gather strong communities. For a taste of Asia, follow the guide!
The Belleville square

The original Chinatown grew in the Seventies in a golden triangle defined by Avenue de Choisy, Avenue d'Ivry and rue de Tolbiac. Cambodian boat-people would arrive there after having escaped to Pol-Pot atrocities, alongside Vietnamese immigrants. With no surprise, it's the place to eat a Pho soup or a Bo-Bun. You may not feel inspired by the Peking ducks on display, but yes, they can be good too! Apart from restaurants, the area is filled with Tang Frères supermarkets, and on a more sacred touch, with numerous Buddhist temples.

You could start with the Temple des Olympiades. Set in the middle of the eponymous towers, they offer a beautiful insight into the Buddhist culture. A light music floats in the room, mixed with the delicate smell of incense. Flowers and gifts are piled in front of three sparkling Buddha by the faithful, happy to find a spiritual shelter incarnating Asia.

For a more mundane experience, but still very original, don't miss a visit to the Tang Frères emporium. From some challenging duck's blood to more tempting shrimps, your visit will help you discover the secrets of Asian cooking. Another supermarket, Paris Store, offers kitchenware and Buddha statuettes alongside smelly durians and incense.

If you believe in the strong renown of Chinese medicine, or if you want to take a glimpse at curious remedies, check A la Calebasse verte, an herbalist's shop managed by Ms Liu offering 500 medicinal plants. For tea lovers, L'Empire des Thés gathers 200 references : it's a true embassy for Chinese tea in Paris. The last Sunday of each month, it organizes a tasting and a small conference on the Gong Fu Cha - The Chinese Tea Ceremony.

The Belleville square

For Chinese New Year, happening in January or February in accordance with the Moon calendar, the Chinese districts attire themselves with red lanterns. Floats parade and firecrackers are blown against evil spirits. These ceremonies are held in various parts of the city: Olympiades, Belleville and also in the third district.

For a plunge into the Wenzhu community, take a stroll in Belleville. The area has long been a shelter for immigrant communities : it welcomed Sepharadic Jews and Muslims before the Chinese arrived from the South of Shangaï. You won't miss the huge President : this restaurant towers above the Belleville square. Enter its doorway flanked by two lions and and go upstairs to the kitsch dining room - the double staircase is popular with Chinese weddings on Sundays nights, the Bride posing mid-way. Another successful and good address is the Nioulaville : dim sum are brought to your table with impressive trolleys, in a quite hectic atmosphere. For a quieter option and a shorter menu, numerous vietnamese eating-houses are available in the area : Cyclo, for example, will provide you with some faultless cooking in its tiny dining-room.

Another little Chinatown has settled in rue du Temple and the neighbourhood. It's one of the oldest communities, mainly organized in the Clothing trade business. On rue au Maire, various cheap restaurants offer some decent food : to find the best, follow the queue !

Two pagodas can be found in Paris and around: one welcomes the Art gallery C.T. Loo et Compagnie, near the Parc Monceau and the other is the modern Chinagora in Alfortville. The latest is a shopping mall which includes a hotel, several restaurants, the inevitable karaoke bar, shops, and a beautiful garden of the Nine Dragons, Jardin des Neuf Dragons.
