To understand the origins of the multicultural nature of contemporary French society, start with a visit to the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, set in the Art-déco palace of Porte Dorée. With a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, it proves how the French identity has been enriched by its diversity.
For a fascinating insight into the most beautiful artifacts of other cultures, a visit to the Musée du Quai Branly is a must. It gathers historical works of art from Africa, Asia, America and the Pacific, and is conveniently very close to the Eiffel Tower . It also offers a rich programme of living theatre, debates and so on. Don't miss its garden, and admire the building, designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel.
At the other side of the river, you'll find the Musée Guimet . It's one of the most important Asian arts collections of the world, which displays sculptures, ivories, bronzes, jewels, china, paintings... from the Himalayas, central Asia, Afghanistan, China, Korea, Japan and India. There's a strong focus on Buddhism: a department is entirely dedicated to its artifacts. The Zen garden welcomes the traditional Chaji (the Japanese Tea Ceremony). Another beautiful museum dedicated to Asia is the Musée Cernuschi. Its collection includes earthenware, jade works, antique paintings and bronzes, and is displayed in the magnificent Mansion House of Henri Cernuschi, near the Parc Monceau.
For a real discovery of the Arabic culture, you should visit the Institut du Monde Arabe . By the riverside, in the Fifth district, the very architecture of this building designed by Jean Nouvel personifies the union between the French and the Arabic cultures. The permanent collections are dedicated to Arabic arts from the earliest times: they include miniatures, calligraphy, paintings and a few contemporary artists. The place also welcomes popular temporary exhibitions, as well as screenings, debates and meetings. Check the amazing views of its restaurant over the river and the city.
Africa too has its museum. The Musée Dapper, in the Sixteenth district, promotes African arts and the positive effects of the diasporas originating from the Sahara and below. Check its temporary exhibitions and its great schedule: with regular conferences and screenings, it's more than a museum, but a very good place to enjoy African arts and culture in Paris.
