Vincent Van Gogh

On Van Gogh's Trail

On the way down the road, visit Vincent Van Gogh's last place of residence, the Auberge Ravoux. If the paintings rendered here sell for millions today, you will be surprised by the simplicity of his bedroom, situated in the attic of the inn.  A particular impression, silent and morose, reigns over this 'suicide room', left intact from the day of Van Gogh's death.

Continue your walk in Van Gogh's footsteps with a stop at the Notre-Dame d'Auvers church, a bit higher up in the village. Primarily constructed in the 12th and 13th-centuries, Notre-Dame d'Auvers inspired one of the artists greatest works. The original painting can be found in the Musée d'Orsay, and a copy remains behind the church as part of the discovery path that places 'reproductions of Van Gogh's paintings' in proximity to the original points of inspiration.

Follow the road behind the church to the village cemetery, where you will find Van Gogh's grave. Vincent and his brother Theo rest beneath asombre stone sepulchre, covered in ivy. The vine that has linked the two brothers together, for eternity, was left by the son of Dr. Gachet, an old friend of the brothers.

Visit Doctor Gachet's House in theNorth-West corner of the village. This great art collector was a also afriend of great painters like Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissaro. Attached to a cliff, this beautiful home exhibits numerous paintings, objects and furnishings belonging to the painters from Auvers. Don't miss a walk through the gardens, garnished with hundred year old trees, where the doctor entertained his guests around the famous 'red table', depicted by Van Gogh in his painting, Portrait of Doctor Paul Gachet, at the Orsay Museum.
