Buttes de Montmartre

The village of  Montmartre

To reach the top of the hill, the strivers will climb up the steps while the wanderers will take the lift, le Funiculaire. Once at the top of he hill, one of the highest points of the capital, take the time to sit on the steps and admire the magnificent view of Paris to the gentle hum of the buskers playing nearby.

Then take a walk to la place du Tertre. To get to this picturesque artists square, take the rue du Cardinal Dubois past le square Nadar, then turn left. The pianists and the accordion players set the rhythm for the painters as the amused tourists watch from the café terraces.

To discover the village of Montmartre, don't hesitate to explore the tiny streets and courtyards on the hill. As you wind down the hill you will discover the vineyards, a wooden windmill (Moulin de la Galette), and the local residents. Montmartre is home to many contemporary artists, actors and celebrities. For a garden-style lunch, you can choose between le Square on the rue Marcadet (traditional but inventive cuisine on the veranda) and the Rose Bakery on the rue des Martyrs (restaurant, grocer and tea room serving biological products).

Continue up the rue Lepic until you arrive at the rue des Abbesses. You will find yourself in the heart of bohemian chic with the latest fashion boutiques, selling clothes, accessories and design objects, in refined shops. Chez Omiz (8 rue des Abbesses), Spree (16 rue de la Vieuville) and Série Limitée (20 rue Houdon).
