Cimetière du Montparnasse

Cimetière du Montparnasse

Gainsbourg, Sartre, Baudelaire, Soutine : the Montparnasse cemetery is the eternal home of the artists.

In the heart of the lively Montparnasse area, between la place Edgar Quinet and the boulevard Raspail, the cemetery offers an occasion to stroll through the tree-lined aisles.
In the middle of the cemetery, the « Génie du sommeil éternel » (genie of eternal sleep) sculpture holds the central position.  Serge Gainsbourg rests nearby in a tomb covered in metro tickets, left as a souvenir by the visitors in memory of the song « Poinçonneur des Lilas ».
Don't miss the tombs of the famous members of  the French literary and artistic crowd: Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Baudelaire, Ionesco,  Man Ray, Soutine, Dreyfus, Beckett and even Brancusi.  You can see Brancusi's famous sculpture of  the kiss « le Baiser » on top of his tomb.
