Panthéon

Basilica, then a symbol of the republic after the French Revolution, the Pantheon dominates the Latin Quarter, the Luxembourg Gardens and the Sorbonne.

Climb up the steps to the top of the Pantheon, then turn around: from high up, the Luxembourg Gardens at the end of the rue Soufflot have lost their grandeur in comparison to the Pantheon.

Considered the soul of the Latin Quarter, the edifice is surprising. Off and on basilica and republican symbol, these two functions give it a unique character and identity. Contemporary art installations sometimes inhabit the space.

Masterpiece of 18th-century architecture, the Pantheon blends Greek and Gothic styles with flair, so much so that the imposing construction is actually lightened by the columns and the dome that protect it.

Don't miss a visit to the crypt... Veritable republican necropolis, the crypt houses the sepultures of historic personalities, scientist and writers such as Pierre and Marie Curie, Victor Hugo, Jean Jaurès, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire and Emile Zola... The great names that have left their mark on the history of France since the French Revolution are mentioned on the facade of the Pantheon. Lift your eyes and you can read the message: « Aux grands hommes, la patrie reconnaissante » (To great men, national recognition).
