Musée de la Vie Romantique

The spirit of this 19th-century artistic movement, recreated for you in a bucolic setting, a former artistic and intellectual centre founded by Ary Scheffer.

A charming private mansion, right in the heart of the Nouvelle Athènes district. At the end of a tree-lined driveway, alongside a garden of flowers (where you can sample incredible patisseries), you will find two studios covered in wisteria and overhung by a stained glass roof. It was here that Dutch painter Ary Scheffer welcomed Romantic artists at the beginning of the 20th century - his neighbours Delacroix, Géricault and George Sand as well as Chopin and Liszt, among others. All met at 16, Rue Chaptal to exhibit their works, read out their writings, etc.

In order that you can imagine the reality of this artistic coterie, the mansion’s harmonious and historic setting has been recreated by the famous interior designer Jacques Garcia. The majority of the collection is devoted to George Sand. Furniture, jewellery, paintings etc. - here you will discover one of the largest collections of items belonging to the writer. As well as paintings by the owner of the building - Ary Scheffer - and works by their contemporaries.

The museum organizes story readings to introduce children to Romanticism and likes to tell them tales about the escaped animals from "Mare au Diable", by George Sand.
