The National Museum for the History of Immigration

A museum dedicated to the history of foreigners in France and their importance to the economic, social and cultural development of the country.

The new Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration (national museum for the history of immigration), which opened its doors in October 2007, is housed in the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris. It traces 200 years of immigration history, through a large collection of archive documents, photographs, drawings and works of art, as well as temporary exhibitions, artistic events and a media library.

The permanent exhibition, entitled "Repères", is based around various themes. It displays a wide variety of photographs, audiovisual exhibits and press cartoons… The museum also tries to display souvenirs which are part of the heritage of French immigration (a suitcase, a sewing machine, etc.), as well as a collection of art works evoking the problems of the rootlessness and integration of foreigners.
