Exhibitions - Civilisation
A great tribute to one of the great figures of the promotion of primitive arts, also awakened to the art of his time.
This event is over. To find another one in Paris Île-de-France, see the datebook.
His influence on the emergence of the taste for “primitive’’ objects becoming works of art was considerable. Charles Ratton (1897-1986) was one of the foremost experts in this art that was then called "nègre".
The Museum of Quai Branly chooses to trace the course of this extraordinary collector and art dealer, first specialist in objects of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with two hundred works and documents.
Caught in an intimate staging reconstituting the interior of Charles Ratton’s office, you later discover his relationship with the Surrealists André Breton, Man Ray and Paul Eluard. Then comes the unfolding of his incredible career, during which he assumes the role of a steward and an expert in great sales. Open to his time, he also organizes Paris one of the first surrealist art exhibitions and participated in the invention of the concept of crude art with Jean Dubuffet. A journey that enables us to measure the extent of erudition and curiosity of a passionate man who at the dawn of his eighty years still participated in some sales of primitive art as an expert.
