Exhibitions - History
The Parisian catacombs bear traces of a tropical sea over 45 million years old. This is revealed in an original exhibition.
«Under the pavements, the beach». This was true in Paris 49 to 40 million years before our time. This discovery was made by a group of geologists observing the soil in the Catacombs. This geological era is referred to as «Lutetian» by reference to the Roman name of Paris, «Lutetia».
This is what we learn from the unusual exhibition La mer à Paris which takes place in the Catacombs. The formation of the subsoil in Paris is illustrated by explanatory displays with maps, photographs, reconstructions and engravings placed along the visitors’ course: at the bottom of the downward stairs, at the quarry-workers’ footbath, before the entrance to the ossuary... The visible rocks tell a new story, about the Lutetian sea in Paris.
