The underground system of Paris is a veritable labyrinth covering 300 kilometres, where two of those kilometres actually serve as a cavernous cemetery.
At the end of the 19th-century, the cemeteries of Paris were saturated. The state then decided to dig up the six million bodies, Parisians who were buried there, including famous figures such as La Fontaine, Montesquieu and Danton.
Far from lugubrious, a visit to the Catacombs, renovated in 2005, allows you to see the capital from another perspective. Solid arches and reassuring lighting make the visit agreeable and take you on a unique journey out of time.
You won't be the first to satisfy your morbid curiosity, King Charles X, the Austrian Emperor François 1st and Napoleon III all visited the catacombs in their day.
