Officially opened on the day of the bicentenary of the storming of the Bastille, in 1989, the building designed by architect Carlos Ott offers wide façades constructed from anthracite marble and glass, ensuring the inside of the space is visible and thereby emphasizing its accessibility.
With its 2700 seats in total, its homogenous acoustics, its unique set equipment, its sets and costumes and accessories, the Opéra Bastille is a great modern theatre and an international lyric stage. Ballets, concerts, operas, plays, etc. - this "opera open to all" offers an exceptional and very wide-ranging programme, even to youngsters, since the Opéra offers activities and performances aimed at children to introduce them to music and dance.
