Basilique cathédrale de Saint-Denis
On the outskirts of Paris, in the centre of Saint-Denis, the Gothic necropolis of French King's is an historic place still very much alive.
The sun shines through the stained glass windows, the columns loose themselves in the arches... the grace of the Basilica of Saint-Denis is enchanting. If you listen carefully, you may hear the ancient King's whispering among themselves.
With more than seventy sepulchres and tombs, the necropolis of the Basilica represents one of the most important collections of funeral sculptures from the 12th-16th centuries.
More than just a religious site, this is a veritable cultural centre: in the Middle Ages, the Basilica housed the largest library in France. It is however, the incredible sepulchres that have made the cathedral an international treasure. Have a look at the program beforehand, for their are often events or festivals scheduled.
