A lovely walk on one of the high points in Paris, the Sacred Heart Basilica in Montmartre is an architectural « must-see ».
The Basilica of Montmartre offers a splendid view of the capital.
Built in 1890, after the French defeat against the Prussians in the war of 1870, this edifice chose the highest point in the city.
The Basilica is a veritable architectural jewel. Realised in a Roman-Byzantine style, the construction is remarkable for its Greek cross, its majestic dome and its arcade, decorated with the largest mosaic in the world (475 m²).
At the summit of the dome, 80 m high, a vertiginous bell is suspended: 3 metres in diameter for 7000 kg in weight. The « Savoyard », named after the dioceses in the Savoy that offered the bell to the Sacred Heart Chapel, resonates on the Butte Montmartre. On the way down, take the path that winds through the gardens in front of the Sacre Coeur.
